Mike Liu (Trade Adviser) - Meet The Team!
December 20 2016
How did you get into the business (Business, International Trade, ABCS etc)?
I started my career in the financial services industry as a Portfolio Analyst. In the early days, I was purely focusing on analysing the return and performance of stocks, bonds and portfolios. The more I learnt about investment, the more I wanted to know about the business itself not just the data in the financial model. From there, I was thinking it might a good idea to work directly with business to help them to succeed in real world instead of only looking at their financials and forecast their future. Since the inception of the thought, I came across some opportunities in business advisory area and ABCS suits me the best.
Favourite flavour of ice cream?
1 interesting fact about yourself (get creative).
I am a Karaoke fan but really bad at singing even I enjoy singing. Lol. A bit self-conflict.
Worst advice you were ever given about your area of expertise?
One of my client was seeking for solution regarding their current performance management system and the purpose is to enhance and improve their capability to on board new clients. I have given the advice to automate the calculation and process by using macro in excel which reduces their cost and improves the efficiency. After half a year, the person who was trained for writing the macro and building up the financial model left the company and the whole process was left in mess. When they came back for further advice, I recommended them for commercial software instead of excel as their turnover is high and couldn’t facilitate the low cost solution.
Biggest achievement to date?
I have managed to on board a new client within a two-week tight timeline (an extremely short notice period). The outcome was positive and successfully and I have input tremendous efforts to get everything done before the deadline. It was the biggest achievement as the project was completed under huge pressure.
